M. Basketball. Cousins Named SEC Freshman of the Week

UK men’s basketball player DeMarcus Cousins was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. Cousins, a 6-11 forward from Birmingham, Ala., averaged 18.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in wins over No. 25 Ole Miss and at LSU. He had double-double efforts with 18 points and 13 rebounds against Ole Miss and then 19 points and 14 rebounds at LSU. He has recorded six straight double-doubles, becoming the first Wildcat since 1989 to accomplish that feat. Cousins’ 14 double-doubles on the season lead the SEC and are the most by a UK player since 2000.

Kentucky’s Victoria Dunlap was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in UK’s two wins over Ole Miss and Arkansas, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced.

An impressive performance for the Kentucky track and field team concluded with three in the top six of the women’s shot put and a win by freshman Walter Luttrell in the 5,000 meters at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, held on Saturday at Rector Field House.

W. Basketball. Mathies’ 27 Leads UK Hoops Past Arkansas

A’dia Mathies scored 27 points and Victoria Dunlap added 22 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 20 Kentucky beat Arkansas 71-57 on Sunday for its seventh straight win. Dunlap scored 20 of her points in the second half as Kentucky (20-3, 8-2 Southeastern Conference) broke a 33-33 halftime tie. The Wildcats moved within a half-game of idle Tennessee for the conference lead. Lyndsay Harris scored 20 points and Charity Ford added 10 to lead Arkansas (9-14, 1-9). The Razorbacks led 8-0 and Harris hit four 3-pointers in the first half to help Arkansas stay close with the Wildcats.
